Dubai Municipality has completed the enhancement of three heritage tourist trails in Deira, blending history with modern upgrades. Covering nearly two kilometres, the project connects markets, landmarks, and traditional architecture through an AED 9.5 million initiative. The aim is to revitalise cultural spaces while boosting tourism and supporting local businesses.
The upgraded routes include the Gold Souq Trail, the Al Ahmadiya School Heritage Axis, and the Spice Souq Axis, together spanning 25,800 square metres. These trails link seven traditional markets, from spices and herbs to textiles and carpets, with more than 500 shops benefitting from improved access and visibility. Historical sites such as Al Ahmadiya School, Heritage House, and Bin Naeem Mosque are now seamlessly integrated into the visitor experience.
Enhancements include new shading, upgraded lighting, improved pavements, and authentic materials like sarooj plaster to preserve architectural character. According to Bader Anwahi, CEO of the Public Facilities Agency, the project strengthens Deira’s role as a cultural hub while supporting economic growth. As part of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, the initiative highlights the city’s commitment to celebrating heritage while shaping a vibrant future.
