Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths confirmed that all operations at Dubai International Airport (DXB) will eventually relocate to Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC). Speaking at Arabian Travel Market, he emphasized that running two major hubs in close proximity would be inefficient, especially with DWC planned to be five times the size of DXB. The full transition will occur once DWC can accommodate all existing services.
Griffiths explained that by the time the move is feasible, most of DXB’s infrastructure will have reached the end of its operational life. Keeping it functional would require significant investment, making its continued operation economically unviable. While developers are reportedly interested in the DXB site, no official redevelopment plan has been announced.
Relocating the airport to Dubai South is expected to positively affect city traffic. Griffiths noted that future urban growth is likely to occur in that direction, away from the congested northern areas near the Sharjah border. This shift could help ease transportation pressures across the emirate.
