A major archaeological site in Sharjah, the Faya Palaeolandscape, has been officially inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Recognised at the 47th session of the World Heritage Committee in Paris, Faya is now the second site in the UAE to receive this distinction, following Al Ain’s cultural sites in 2011. Its inclusion follows over a decade of research and preparation, with the nomination submitted in February 2024.
The site is renowned for its continuous record of early human settlement dating back more than 200,000 years. Unlike other regions considered migration corridors, Faya served as a long-term habitat in a challenging desert environment. Excavations over the past 30 years have revealed 18 archaeological layers, each reflecting distinct phases of prehistoric life.
Faya’s inscription highlights the UAE’s growing contribution to global heritage and early human history. The site offers valuable insights into the adaptability and innovation of ancient populations in arid climates. Leaders behind the nomination emphasized that Faya, now shared with the world, stands as a reminder of humanity’s deep-rooted connection to the region.
