Dubai has unveiled a new and improved design for its traditional abras, enhancing capacity and comfort while preserving their heritage charm. First introduced as a vital link between Deira and Bur Dubai, these historic boats have remained an iconic mode of transport in the city. The latest upgrade marks the fourth generation of abras, expanding capacity from 20 to 24 passengers and incorporating modern features for a smoother commute.
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has introduced smart systems to improve passenger experience, including real-time journey updates, digital destination boards, and safety alerts. The revamped seating and flooring enhance comfort, making rides more accessible and enjoyable for all commuters. These upgrades align with Dubai’s goal of improving marine transport while maintaining the abra’s traditional appeal.
Beyond daily commutes, the redesigned abras aim to boost marine tourism, offering visitors an easier and more scenic way to explore Dubai’s historic districts. The new design also follows the Dubai Universal Design Code, ensuring safety and accessibility for all passengers, including people of determination. Ahmed Hashim Bahrozyan, CEO of RTA’s Public Transport Agency, emphasized that these changes reflect the RTA’s commitment to enhancing public transport while preserving cultural heritage.
